Warm up Sketch : Hulk

this sketch is for Kathyrn.

She wanted a cartoony Hulk drawing @ Wizard World Toronto 2 weeks ago and I didn't do a very good job of making him cartoony. He's my second attempt. I hope you like it cuz that's the best I could do.

If you want to check out Kathryn's blog that she rarely updates, go here.

Roussel/Heron Jam Pieces

So my buddy Jason Roussel & I decided to do a couple jam pieces.
One of my pencils with his inks (Flash) and one of Jason's pencils with my inks (Hulk).
Jason did a very Kirby inspired Hulk and it looks dope. This was a fun time.

Jason does great sketch card work & I'm sure he takes commissions.
You can check out Jason's work at his DeviantArt page

Reviews : Quitely, Judge Dredd, DC, etc.

Judge Dredd : the Pit - Joel Buxton has really got me into the whole Dredd universe and I'm happy to be here. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pit, it's quite the epic Dredd story I was looking for. Dredd is a stone cold badass and the character has an aura all to himself. It's no wonder Judge Dredd has so often crossed over with Batman, while personalities are quite different both are married to nothing but their mission for justice. My only complaint for the Pit is the lack of consistency in artists. It's a valid excuse to say most 2000ad books are collected shorts from 2000ad magazine or Judge Dredd Magazine leading to quite the variety of artists but it can be hard to follow who's who in the story. I guess that's all I had to say about the Pit, it's big, it's epic, go check it out. PRETTYGOODShimura - I have a new favorite character and his name is Judge-Inspector Shimura. He's part Judge Dredd, part Wolverine, part Ninja Gaiden.
I picked up this collection for the Frank Quitely art and it did not disappoint. Shimura was Quitely's first work with 2000ad and it blows my mind how amazing he was so early in his career. Quitely has art chores on the first story and another towards the end featuring Shimura's protege Inspector-Judge Inaba. Written by Robbie Morrison, this collection has many short stories with an assortment of artists. The biggest problem I had with the book is that Shimura didn't spend as much time as I would have liked in his Inspector-Judge costume before going on the lam. While there were a few stories that I didn't care for, overall, the Quitely art combined with the Simon Fraser and Colin McNeil drawn stories make me feel like I got my money's worth. I'll be looking for more Shimura. GREAT

DC Universe Legacy #8 - I'm pretty out of touch with the DC and Marvel universes so I'm not sure where or what this book is supposed to be. I wanted it because of the 8 pages New Gods story with art by Quitely. Thanks to Joel for finding it & picking up a copy for me. You're the man, Buxton!
So, 75% of the book is a recap of the Superman Returns saga and how that leads into Hal Jordan going nuts and killing Green Lantern Corps. I'm not gonna lie, as shitty and cheesy as the writing by Lein Wein is, this book really rejunvenated my love for those stories. I was in grade 5 when Superman died, so it was a pretty big deal. Now I find myself doodling the Cyborg Superman, Eradicator, Superboy (90's earrings with Fonzie jacket version), Steel, and even mullet Superman with the lame black costume.
The New Gods story? I'm not really sure what's goin' on & I don't really care. Quitely draws a mean Darkseid and Orion so I'm happy to have this book. GREAT

Young Shaney : BOLT

This is Bolt. I think that was his name. I found this drawing that's dated 1993.When I was in grade 5, I created an Xmen rip off super hero team.
For some reason I didn't create a name for the team but it was lead by 2 brothers, Flammable, who had power too shoot fire out of any part of his body, and Bolt, who could shoot lightning. They were similar to the Cyclops and Havok relationship. I believe Bolt was a little bit of a loose cannon and was jealous of his brother because he was the true leader of the team. Eventually I was going to have Bolt leave to start his own team (a la X-Factor).
Now, my characters weren't the greatest but I think Bolt was the worst of the bunch. He was just a dude with long blond hair in a ponytail and a black costume with a yellow bolt across the chest. He's kind of an amalgamation of Havok, the Flash, Static & Black Lightning.

With these new drawings, I went with more of a cargo pant look as opposed to a one piece tight spandex thing that shows off his junk. I don't know why all these super heroes wear tight spandex pants. That's not cool.

Old Man, Look At My Life

So, I'm getting old.
I'll be 29 in a few weeks and although that's not OLD old, I've been thinking about how I'm embracing it as I become a bitter, old curmudgeon.

Here's 10 Reasons why I feel 'old',

10 - My humor is changing. I don't find the same things I used to love funny anymore & I'm starting to enjoy types of humor I never ever thought I would. I no longer enjoy these new episodes of Family Guy, the Simpsons, or Futurama. Maybe the writing isn't good anymore but maybe not. Now, I'm enjoying things I never thought I would like, King of the Hill & Dilbert.

9 - I enjoy talk radio. Now, I still enjoy music quite a bit but I find myself listening to a lot of talk radio, podcasts, audiobooks.

8 - I'm getting super interested in war. I'm reading all kinds of books, watching movies & documentaries on all types of war. The Civil War, the War of 1812, WWI, WWII, and especially Vietnam, I can't get enough. Pretty soon I'll start fabricating stories about being in 'Nam.

7 - I don't know any cool places. Most of the clubs or bars I used to go to aren't there anymore or have a different name. I say things like, 'We used to go to that club _____. Is that still around?'

6 - People get pissed when you call them after midnight. All my friends, we'd stay up late and do all kinds of fun stuff. Now, everyone has to get up early tomorrow.

5 - None of my friends will ever do things on a whim. Everyone needs a reason to go do something fun or go on a spontaneous roadtrip.

4 - The thought of sitting on a porch and yelling at kids to get off my lawn sounds pretty good to me.

3 - I can't really drink like I used to. I never use to get hangovers, then at about 25 I started getting them. After a night of drinking I used to be able to get up and go, now I need the whole next day to recover. The worst part is now I have a few beers, don't even get drunk and the next day I feel hungover. What's the hell is that?

2 - One day you wake up and realise that all your friends are on a softball team.

1 - This was the most eye opening for me. About a month ago, I bought an allergen-free, polyurethane, dustmite/bed bug resistant, top of the line, pillow cover & it made my day. I could not wait to get home to put this bad boy on my pillow. That's some old man business right there.

Young Shaney : Hal Jordan

I found this in a box recently. It's dated 1992 on the back. Man, I loved the Hal with the grey hair streaks on the side.

Reviews : Will Eisner & etc.

Will Eisner's the Dreamer : Will Eisner is simply the most brilliant comic creator there ever was. He started it all, he did it all & he did it perfectly.
Written & illustrated by Eisner, The Dreamer is a semi-autobiographical tale of the comic book boom of the early 1940's that lead to the creation of legendary super heroes we still celebrate today. Eisner uses pretty translucent code names for himself & many famous creators like Bob Kane & Jack Kirby, etc., while telling the story of the birth of the comic book & comic book business. It's absolutely BRILLIANT and everyone should read it. Will Eisner's the Name of the Game : A multi-generational story following privilege and collapse many families that ultimately intertwine in the early 1900's. You could explain the plot of this story and I would not be interested but Eisner has a way of making anything intriguing with his wonderful sequential storytelling. GREAT
Pigeons From Hell - I picked up this re-telling of Robert E. Howard's short story from 1938, because of the brilliantly illustrated cover by Nathan Fox. I did not love this story. It was neither the creepy nor grotesque horror when it tried to be and any of the characters that are killed off have little influence in shocking the reader since there is no time to even get to know them. Nathan Fox's art is unclear at times but I feel it has more to do with the coloring. The normally stellar Dave Stewart definitely dropped the ball on this series. I will hang onto my copy of this because of the Nate Fox art but I was simply not impressed. LAME

Illegal Wrestling move!!!

I came across this and it's probably the greatest thing I've ever seen
