Pretty Good Movie Round Up: November

I watched some more movies, here's my thoughts.

CHOKE - I read the Chuck Palahniuk book that this movie was based on a few years ago & I really liked it. My problem with the movie is that it is exactly like the book. The film version adds nothing to story. David Finchers version of Palaniuk's Fight Club had it's own style, while Choke does not. I'd rather just read the book. LAME BRUNO - It's funny, it's basically gay Borat. Probably the gayest movie ever. GREATThe FUGITIVE - I recently rewatched the Fugitive starring Harrison Ford & Tommy Lee Jones, & it is as BRILLIANT as it was in 1993. I love it. One of the best movies ever. DISTRICT 9 - When D9 came out in theaters a few months ago I had a friend tell me the whole story so i wouldn't have to watch it. My friends were watching it so I sat in and I really liked it. I like the documentary style of District 9. GREAT FUNNY PEOPLE - This movie started off really good, it was just too long. Rogen, Hill, Schwartzman, & Bana are all hilarious, & Sandler was better than he'd been in 10 years. I enjoyed the mixture of comedy with serious drama & the cameos by a ton of comedians (oh & Eminem). I know Judd Apatow had full control of this project and it was very personal to him, but that's exactly the problem with it. Funny People would be a lot better if it was cut & edited to make it tighter and less drawn out. PRETTYGOOD RUSHMORE - The first time I watched a Wes Anderson film was The Darjeeling LTD. (with the Digital Kontent boys) & I was very impressed. In fact, I was so impressed that I waited 2 and a half years before I watched another. Rushmore is great. I loved everyones performances in this movie. I love Wes Anderson's style of filmmaking. BRILLIANT. I think I will check out The Royal Tenenbaums, next.

Quote of the Week : Nov -27- 09

Since I love a good quote, & since I don't have a scanner at the moment & need to fill some space, I decided that I will be posting a 'Quote of the Week' on either Friday's or Saturday's.

The inaugural 'Quote of the Week' is from the most quotable show on television, '30 Rock'. I recently just got into 30 Rock & am loving the shit out of it. I will try my best to not use 30 Rock more than once for Quote of the Week, but no promises.

Tracy Jordan: I'm gonna make you a mixtape. Do you like Phil Collins?

Jack Donaghy: I have two ears and a heart, don't I?

Fur Coat Man

I am still working out a few problems with my new new computer & for the time being I am without scanner. I wanted to post the Fur Coat Man sketch so I took a picture with my camera. I'm not really sure who this guy is, I just wanted to practice using a brush pen. He kinda looks like Flash villain, Capt. Cold without a mask. I dunno...

Embarassingly, I had a crush on Ricky Schroder from Silver Spoons. I'm so happy this is being published.

12) If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?

I am watching True Blood online and House. And remain in scowling mode over Heroes. What a waste.

The ORIGINAL Beverly Hills 90210. We used to gather in the common room at university and watch 90210 and then Melrose Place. What a bunch of geeks. The boys liked it too though. Or they were there because the girls were there. It's hard to tell.

22) Favourite artist(s)?

Tara McPherson, Audrey Kawasaki, Andre Jolicoeur, Chris Uminga.

23) If you were on death row what would your last meal be?

Crab, Lobster, Shrimp, Mussels... mmmm seafood.

UFC 106 - thoughts & results

These are probably the worst picks I've made, going 4 out of 9, with 1 draw. terrilble.

Griffin def. Tito Ortiz by decision (split) - I was hoping Tito wins only because I don't like Forrest but as the fight went on I realized that I really don't care for either guy. In the third round Tito completely gassed & was basically a punching bag. We really learned nothing from this fight, except that no matter how healthy Tito says he is he will still come up with a lame excuse when he loses.

Josh Koscheck def. Anthony Johnson by submission (rear-naked choke), rd. 2 - Kos fought a good fight & a smart one. Johnson needs to work a ton on his ground game if he plans to be a complete fighter. Rumble has a ton of potential & is very young but he always looks absolutely lost on the ground.

I liked when Koscheck called out Hardy & said he hasn't fought anyone good, even though he just beat his AKA teammate the week before. Thumbs up to Koscheck for trying to get a title shot by running his mouth. It worked for Carwin.Antonio Rogerio Nogueira def. Louis Arthur Cane by TKO, rd. 1. - wow! I really underestimated Lil' Nog. I picked Cane to win because I thought he had the advantage in striking & Rogerio hasn't looked that impressive lately. I was wrong, Nog was lean and fast with very crisp boxing. I am excited to see Nogueira makes some waves in UFC's stacked light-heavyweight division.Amir Sadollah def. Phil Baroni by decision (unanimous) - Baroni is Baroni, he fought exactly how we thought he would, he got the crap kicked out of him but he's tough as hell. Sadollah was not that impressive in his 3 round beating of Baroni. We'll see what happens with Sadollah but I remain unconvinced that he is a quality welterweight. I did find that Baroni's blood all over Sadollah was very aesthetically pleasing. Paulo Thiago def. Jacob Volkmann by decision (unanimous) - There was a lot of great technical grappling in this fight. Volkmann clearly needs to work on his striking. I like Thiago, I think he's earned his spot among the top 10 welterweights.Ben Saunders def. Marcus Davis by KO, rd. 1 - I was blown away by Saunders knocking out Davis. Saunders looked more mature then in his fight against Swick, but what will he be able to do when he can't knee his opponent from the clinch?Kendall Grove def. Jake Rosholt by submission (triangle choke), rd. 1 - Jake was all over Grove, throwing him around like a ragdoll. Rosholt needs to work on his submission defense & not tap the second he gets caught. Caol Uno & Fabricio Camoes Draw (majority) - I didn't get to see this fight. They say Camoes would've won if he didn't hit Uno with an illegal strike in round 2.

Brian Foster def. Brock Larson by submission (strikes), rd. 2 - Brock didn't look like he'd ever trained anything but top position grappling. I thought Foster wasn't ready for the UFC yet but he looked good. I am excited for Fosters next fight.

George Sotiropopulos def. Jason Dent by submission (armbar), rd. 2 - Both guys looked pretty good. Dent showed some quality striking but it was Sotiropoulos' more rounded game that proved too much for him.

UFC 106 : Ortiz vs Griffin

UFC 106 - Ortiz vs. Griffin 2 , November 21, 2009 , Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas

Main Bouts:
Forrest Griffin (205) vs. Tito Ortiz (204) - I know that Griffin has improved leaps & bounds since their first meeting 3 years ago. I can't say that for Ortiz. Tito has said repeatedly that his back is healthier than it's been in a long time, & that's what was holding him back. I think his injured back may have been a factor but it seems that more than anything Ortiz is a limited fighter who's style stop being so effective once the sport began to evolve. I know that Tito has been working on his striking at Wild Card's with Freddie Roach, but I really can't say for sure how much improved his stand-up will be.
On the other hand, Griffin seems to be taking his first round loss to Anderson Silva terribly. I think Griffin should be doing what GSP did after the Matt Serra loss, & use that as the ultimate motivation to improve as a fighter, but the word out of Xtreme Couture is that he doesn't want to talk about it & is basically ignoring the embarrassing loss.
I would like to see Ortiz get the win here, because he's a great personality, he's a good guy, & I really don't like what a sore loser Forrest has turned into. I hope Tito proves us all wrong, but until then I have to pick Griffin by Decision.
Josh Koscheck (171) vs. Anthony Johnson (170) - Koscheck should win this fight. Anthony Johnson isn't great when guys can take him down & Koschecks wrestling can take Johnson down all day. My problem with picking Koscheck is that he seems to have the 'Jorge Gurgel Syndrome', where he is in love with his stand-up skills, & refuses to take it to the ground where he has the advantage. I don't trust Kos to try to wrestle with Johnson. He didn't do it with Thiago Alves (lost), Yoshiyuki Yoshida (won), Paulo Thiago (lost), Frank Trigg (won). Kos is gonna get hit & hit hard by 'Rumble'. Johnson by KO, rd 2.
Paulo Thiago (169) vs. Jacob Volkmann (170) - I was pissed that we aren't getting the Dustin Hazelett/Karo Parisyan fight, due to Karo pulling out last minute. I really wanted to see Hazelett back in action & I thought the Parisyan fight was a great match up. On the plus side, Thiago vs Volkmann has been moved to the main card. Everyone seems to be on the Volkmann bandwagon. He's 9-0 coming into this fight & can apparently take anyone down. To be honest, I've never seen Volkmann fight before but it doesn't seem he's fought anyone at Thiago's level. I've been very impressed with Paulo in his 2 fights in the UFC, I am gonna take Thiago by Decision. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (205) vs. Luis Cane (205) - This fight has to be the saving grace of this card. With all the changes UFC 106 has gone through, I wouldn't be as excited as I am if not for this match up. I like Lil' Nog but I have to go with Cane (pronounced Con-eh, not Cane). I don't think Rogerio is the fighter his brother is & I see Cane getting the better of him on the feet, & being able to stay out of trouble if it does go to the ground. Cane by TKO, rd 3.
Amir Sadollah (170) vs. Phil Baroni (170) - Baroni is a joke. If Sadollah loses to him then he's an even bigger bigger joke. Sadollah by armbar, rd 2. On Spike:

Marcus Davis (170) vs. Ben Saunders (170) - I like Saunders & I think he is a great prospect, but he showed he was out of his league against Mike Swick in June, & I think the experience of Davis will also be too much for him. Davis by Decision.

Jake Rosholt (185.5) vs. Kendall Grove (186) - Grove has a weak chin & Rosholt has shown very improved striking, so even if Grove is almost a foot taller than Rosholt, it's still a recipe for deisaster for 'Da Spyda'. Grove was letting a gassed Ricardo Almeida take him down, so I don't see why Rosholt can't get takedowns & top position all day long. I think Rosholt will ground & pound Grove into a rd. 2 TKO.

Preliminary Bouts:

Brock Larson (171) vs. Brian Foster (171) - Larson will prove too much for Foster. Larson by sub, rd 1.

Caol Uno (155.5) vs. Fabricio Camoes (155.5) - I'm taking the up & coming Camoes to get points for 3 rounds against veteran Uno. Camoes by Decision.

George Sotiropoulos (155) vs. Jason Dent (155) - Sotiropoulos by sub, rd 3.

WEC 44: Brown vs Aldo - Results

I'm pretty happy to see that I picked the upset Aldo TKO round 2 & went 8-2 in my picks. Jose Aldo is a beast & I look forward to him defending his 145lb title. Not sure what his next fight will be but I know he'll be fighting Urijah Faber if 'the California Kid' can get by Assuncao in January. I also look forward to seeing how Mike Brown recovers & moves forward from losing his title & how he plans to improve to get it back.
Jose Aldo def. Mike Thomas Brown, by TKO (Punches), rd 2

Manny Gamburyan def. Leonard Garcia by Decision, (Unanimous)

Karen Darabedyan def. Rob McCullough by Decision (Split)

Shane Roller def. Danny Castillo, by Submission (Rear-Naked Choke), rd 3

Kamal Shalorus def. Will Kerr, by TKO (Punches), rd 1

L.C. Davis def. Diego Nunes, by Decision (Unanimous)

Cub Swanson def. John Franchi, by Submission (Guillotine Choke), rd. 3
Antonio Banuelos def. Kenji Osawa, by Decision (Unanimous)

Ricardo Lamas def. James Krause, by Decision (Unanimous)

WEC 44 - Picks

While not super excited about this whole card, I am very very eager to see one of the best featherweight match ups ever with rising star Jose Aldo vs Champ Mike Brown. here's my picks,

WEC 44 - Brown vs. Aldo - November 18, 2009 - Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas

WEC Featherweight Championship
Mike Thomas Brown (No. 1 FW, No. 5 PFP) vs. Jose Aldo (No. 6 FW) - I love this fight!!!! I am gonna go with the upset & take Aldo. Brown is such a strong, well rounded Champ but my gut says to go with the explosive momentum of Aldo. Aldo has been tearing guys apart in the division & we've barely seen his Jiu Jitsu game. I really don't care who wins I just want to see a great fight. Aldo by TKO, rd 2.

Leonard Garcia (No. 5 FW) vs. Manny Gamburyan - Gamburyan by Decision
“Razor” Rob McCullough vs. Karen Darabedyan - Darabedyan by Decision

Danny Castillo vs. Shane Roller - Castillo, TKO, rd. 2
Kamal Shalorus vs. Will Kerr - I don't know much about either fighter but what I have heard is that Shalorus is the better fighter so I'll take Shalorus by Decision.
Diego Nunes vs. L.C. Davis - Nunes by Decision
Cub Swanson vs. John Franchi - Swanson by Decision
Antonio Banuelos vs. Kenji Osawa - Banuelos by Decision
Ricardo Lamas vs. James Krause - Lamas by TKO, rd. 3
Seth Dikun vs. Frank Gomez - Gomez, sub rd.2

UFC 105 round up

UFC 105 - my thoughts ,Randy Couture def. Brandon Vera by Decision - Like everyone, I thought Brandon Vera should've got the 'W' from the judges, but I was not surprised to see him do 'not enough' to sway the judges his way. I felt like Randy wasted too much time fighting for the takedown & not getting it. When Randy started to dirty box in the clinch in rounds 2 & 3 he started having some success. If Vera continues to second guess himself he will never be in contention for a title & will always be a 'win 2, lose 1' kind of fighter. I scored it Rd1 10-10, Rd2 10 -9 Vera, Rd3 10-9 Vera, 30-28 Vera. The judges gave the win to Randy because I believe most MMA judges don't understand the difference between octagon control/aggressiveness & EFFECTIVE octagon control/effective aggressiveness. Dan Hardy def Mike Swick, by Decision - I was very impressed with Hardy's improved takedown defense. Looks like 'the Outlaw' is next in line for a welterweight title shot. Along with the good majority of MMA fans, I don't think Hardy will stand much of a chance against GSP. While Hardy has great striking skills & a solid chin, he repeatedly got hit by Swick's jab, while St Pierre likes to rely on his double & sometimes triple jab. Hardy may have been able to stuff Swicks takedown attempts but GSPs double leg takedowns are second to none. I still want to see this fight, Hardy always has a punchers chance. Matt Serra did.
Michael Bisping def Denis Kang by TKO, rd 2 - I can't think of another fighter that can have early success & then just completely fall apart like Kang does. I will say that Bisping showed off some improved offensive wrestling but in reality, Kang lost that fight more than Bisping won it. Matt Brown def. James Wilks by TKO, rd 3 - Brown showed an improved gas tank & this fight went exactly as I thought it would. Ross Pearson def. Aaron Riley by TKO (cut, doctor stoppage), rd 2 - Pearson is a beast & the second I saw Riley's face get busted open I knew it was over. I would really like to see Ultimate Fighter 8 Lightweight winner, Efrain Escudero vs Ultimate Fighter 9 Lightweight winner, Pearson but I highly doubt Zuffa would put that together just yet. Pearson should make some noise @ 155lbs.

John Hathaway def. Paul Taylor Decision (Unanimous)
Terry Etim def. Shannon Gugerty by Submission (Guillotine Choke),rd.2
Nick Osipczak def. Matt Riddle by TKO(Punches),rd.3
Dennis Siver def. Paul Kelly by TKO(Spinning Back Kick and Punches),rd.2
Alexander Gustafsson def. Jared Hamman by KO (Punches), rd 1
Andre Winner def. Roli Delgado by KO (Punches),rd 1

I went 7-4 in my picks for UFC 105. I forgot to mention UFC 104, I went 8-3 while Milo went a dismal 2-9.

UFC 104/Strikeforce round up & UFC 105 Picks

I've been neglecting this blog as of late, but rest assured I am back. I had a lot of problems with my computer, I bought a new one, & I am just now all set up & ready to go.

I feel I missed the boat & will be beating a dead horse with my thoughts on the UFC 104: Machida vs Shogun controversy, so I will quickly run down my thoughts on that & last weeks Strikeforce : Fedor vs Rogers.

I really enjoyed the overall UFC 104 fight card & even though the main event was marred by the judges decision, I thought it was a great 5 round title fight. When watching it live, I scored the fight the same as the judges, 48 -47 for Lyoto Machida, with the champ taking the first 3 rounds. After rewatching it I scored it a 48-48 draw, with Machida taking rounds 1& 3, Shogun rounds 4 & 5, an round 2 a 10-10. they will do a rematch as soon as Machida is ready & I think that is great for everyone. More people will watch the second time around & it will turn both Machida & Shogun into household names.

Last weekend was the Strikeforce : Fedor Emelianenko vs Brett Rogers, free on CBS. This was a great card to showcase the top talent that Strikeforce has. I loved the Fabricio Werdum vs Antonio Silva, Gegard Mousasi vs Remeau Sokoudjou , & the Jason 'Mayhem' Miller vs Jake Sheilds fights. It was perfect for Strikeforce too because the main event ran a little long & a lot of people who were tuning in to watch the 11 o'clock news got to see Fedor knock out the huge Brett Rogers.

UFC 105
Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera - This is the hardest fight for me to pick, but I'll go with Randy to push Vera up against the cage & beat him up for 3 rounds. A lot of people are saying that Vera's Greco-Roman background will help him to counter Randy's great wrestling techniques but I've seen Randy do what he always does against better wrestlers than Vera. On top of that Vera has turn into a counter striker that doesn't really counter, & second guesses himself too much. Vera should've finished Krystof Soszynski & he has all the skills in the world to stop a 46 year old Couture but I'll take Randy by Decision.

•Dan Hardy vs. Mike Swick - Another tough one to call. I think Hardy has the advantage standing up, but as long as Swick comes with a good game plan & takes it to the ground he should get the win. I like Hardy but I don't think he'll get past the more well rounded Swick. Ill take Swick by Decision.

Michael Bisping vs Dennis Kang - I'll take Kang by TKO, rd 3. Kang has the better stand up & he should be able to throw some combo's together & take Bisping down whenever he wants. Bisping doesn't have what it takes to capitalize on Kangs defensive mistakes & when he sees that the fight is not going his way I expect him to get frustrated & lose.

Matt Brown vs James Wilks - Wilks looked good coming off winning the Ultimate Fighter season 9 but it was a pretty poor talent pool. Brown has the better all around skills, the only problem is his cardio. I like Matt Brown to win by TKO rd 2, as long as he doesn't gas.

Aaron Riley vs Ross Pearson - Riley is the lightweight gatekeeper & Pearson should get the win here. Riley is tough as hell though so I think Pearson by Decision.

PRELIMINARY CARD

•Terry Etim vs. Shannon Gugerty - Etim by Decision
•John Hathaway vs. Paul Taylor - Hatthaway by submission, round 2
•Nick Osipczak vs. Matthew Riddle - Osipczak by Decision
•Paul Kelly vs. Dennis Siver - Kelly by Decision
•Alexander Gustafsson vs. Jared Hamman - Hamman by TKO, Round 2
•Roli Delgado vs. Andre Winner -
Winner should run over Roli Delgado. Winner by TKO, round 1.
